Review of Strawman Guidance Document

Following discussion at the previous meeting, the draft has been updated and sent out again. Issues around stakeholders were dealt with at this meeting. The document was reviewed and a revised version will be produced. (JD)

Discussions

Characteristics

These need definition/explanation or notes to make them useful. (AC)

Stakeholders

Onion Diagram of a Train Service was presented and discussed. Updates to levels and groupings of stakeholders and who belongs in each were discussed. Rework to be done. (SW)

Overview

Use of a simple overview was discussed, based on Overview, OV1, in Architecture Frameworks. I was agreed that looking at other MoDAF/DoDAF/NAF views could be useful, to see if any can be used instead of inventing new ones.

Context Diagram

Examples of Context Diagrams were discussed. It was felt that for the same thing being analysed as a service or a system, the Context Diagram for the Service will often/normally be different to that for a System. This could also extend to other parts of the analysis.

Service-Centric views and System-Centric views

Following discussion, the consensus was that having Service-Centric views and System-centric views was a useful route to explore and should be the basis of some research into what we would produce based on our current position and what is available in the literature.

Paper for ASEC 2018

SW discussed a paper he had submitted to IEEE Systems of Systems conference in Paris in June. This was used as the basis for the abstract of a paper for ASEC 2018 which was completed and submitted at the meeting.

Actions

  • SW – to develop draft ASEC2018 paper for review before/on 21 May
  • JD/AC – to add definitions/notes on Characteristics.
  • AF – to look at Standard Architecture Frameworks and their relationship/impact on what we are proposing s contact members of the INCOSE UK Architectures Working Group and Rail Interest Group.
  • IC/NH - to review updated draft Handbook.

Next Meeting

Monday 21 May, 10-30 to 14-30, Rolls-Royce, Filton, Bristol.
